170 Volunteers - 1 Lake - 100 bags of waste: Mission Accomplished! - October 2013

The Oroklini Lake Clean-up day proved to be a very successful event with around 170 volunteers joining the efforts of the LIFE Oroklini project partners, to clean and restore Oroklini Lake. Many local organised groups, groups from schools of the area and Larnaca district, individuals from across the island, adults and children, as well as members of the Green Party and the MP Mr George Perdikes, devoted their time to clean this important site.

The event, organised by the Voroklini Community Council as part of the EU funded LIFE project for the restoration and management of Oroklini Lake, took place on 13 October aiming to remove litter from the site, while at the same time raising awareness about the wetland, which is a Special Protection Area (Natura 2000 site for birds) and an Important Bird Area! Few days before the volunteer clean-up, the Voroklini Community Council had removed bulky waste that could not be removed by the volunteers.

The organisers and the rest of the project partners (Game and Fauna Service, BirdLife Cyprus, Environment Department and Department of Forests), would like to thank all the volunteers who contributed to this effort! Without the 170 volunteers, our work would have been so much harder.

The Clean-up Day was a great success and source of inspiration and positive energy to continue the implementation of the LIFE Oroklini project.
