LIFE Oroklini project travels to Crete - May '13

LIFE Oroklini project coordinator from BirdLife Cyprus, Melpo Apostolidou, travelled to Crete to present at a workshop the project for the protection of Oroklini Lake as a good example of restoration and management of a natural wetland. The workshop was organised by WWF Greece and Chersonissos Municipality as part of WWF’s project on “Wetland protection on Aegean islands", and an effort to protect Malia wetland in Chersonissos area, Crete. Stakeholders form government authorities, scientists and residents of the area attended the workshop that was organised on 25 April. The workshop titled “Possibilities, restrictions and opportunities for a sustainable management of Malia wetland and the wider area” aimed at setting a common basis for future steps for the management of Malia wetland. Presenting LIFE Oroklini project at this workshop contributed significantly in the exchange of information and experience, and highlighted that such projects exist and are feasible when key stakeholders are involved.
